Why Pay More?

As you are surfing the net and looking at various counselors you will find a wide range of fees.  If you are reading their information, it might seem that there isn’t much difference and you might as well take the lower fee.  There are a few reasons to consider the benefits to someone with a higher fee:

  1. Often the higher fee person has much more experience and that is why they charge more.
  2. People who charge more tend to go to more training and stay current with the most recent information in psychology and neurobiology.
  3. If you pay someone who isn’t as up-to-date or experienced, you will be spending a lot of money only to get very little in the way of results.  Later, you will need to go to someone with more experience and better skills anyway.
  4. You deserve a quality person to help you with your life, your relationship and your work environment.

As you are reading about each counselor, determine if they sound like a good fit for you. If they do, regardless of their fee, call and talk to them. A counselor that is a good fit is much more important than whether they cost less.  If you are calling for a therapist, you are recognizing you need the assistance of an expert.  Pick one that can really help.

Here is one person's experience regarding choosing a counselor:

  • "When my husband and I decided to go to counseling, we met with several counselors, and we had an immediate impression that one in particular would be very good. My husband thought, though, that someone close and a little less expensive would be just as good, I agreed that this sounded reasonable. That thinking almost cost us our marriage! We eventually went back to the person we clicked with, and now have a strong, healthy relationship. Counseling is no place to cut corners! We could have saved ourselves a lot of pain and even expense from our subsequent separation if we'd just realized all counselors are not created equal! "       -JD
